Document Details : Title: Geesteswetenschap, in drievoud Author(s): VAN HEUSDEN, Barend Journal: Spiegel der Letteren Volume: 58 Issue: 4 Date: 2016 Pages: 487-504 DOI: 10.2143/SDL.58.4.3200588 Abstract : This paper aims at contributing to the discussion on the Humanities by arguing that the Humanities do not constitute a homogeneous whole, but in fact consist of three separate ‘domains’: that of an attitude (the domain of reflection), that of a skill (the domain of interpretation) and that of knowledge (the domain of a science of culture). Each domain is briefly characterized in terms of its properties, its problems, and its relation to the university. The lack of clarity concerning the relation between the three domains may well be an important reason for the ‘crisis’ the Humanities seem incapable of breaking away from. |
