Although phenomenology as it has evolved is certainly not to be reduced to a philosophy of mind, it finds its historical roots in a philosophical investigation of the mind, and, in the present context, it can certainly contribute something to this field again. The interest of a phenomenological approach is obvious as to the question whether intentionality is a basic feature of mind and the question of phenomenal consciousness. However, one should not take phenomenology to provide possible answers to these questions only, but to define a global framework in which they can be formulated as well and in the first place. From this point of view, the critical examination of the phenomenological philosophy of mind may help clarify the foundational issues linked with the basic concepts of the philosophy of mind. |
