According to Josephus, John the Baptist was beheaded at Machaerus, a stronghold on the eastern side of the Dead Sea. This can be accepted, but the date he gives (36 or 37) is just the result of his usual difficulty in sorting out inconsistent sources. It should be significantly lowered. |
