Toomer of the surviving letters in Arabic of Niqūlāwus al-Ḥalabī, an Arabic-speaking Christian from Syria who spent several years in northern Europe as a copyist of manuscripts, complemented by a study of them in the context of their time and place, illuminates the role of native speakers in the development of Oriental studies in seventeenth-century Europe, especially in the acquisition and copying of manuscripts in Arabic and other oriental languages. It also provides new information on the careers of prominent scholars in England, Holland and elsewhere, and gives a unique insight into the culture of such an immigrant and his difficulties in working and living in strange lands. |
