Emphasis is on the relationship of the churches with the city fabric and particularly on the attempts to integrate the churches into the city plan. The first part of the paper focuses on the formation of the new city in the mid-19th century. The second part focuses on the evolution of the city over time to the present, with reference to heritage protection and tourism development. The paper concludes with current challenges for the management of these churches, and with some suggestions to improve their management. The research is based on a critical review of recent literature and especially on field visits and archival study. |
