Document Details : Title: Gaudium et Spes Subtitle: Impulses of the Spirit for an Age of Globalisation Author(s): VAN STICHEL, Ellen , DE MAESENEER, Yves Journal: Louvain Studies Volume: 39 Issue: 1 Date: 2015-16 Pages: 63-79 DOI: 10.2143/LS.39.1.3144266 Abstract : Guided by the metaphor ‘impulses of the Spirit’ (Gaudium et spes §§11 and 92), we aim to contribute to a renewed reception of Vatican II’s final document, especially among the new generation of (moral) theologians. Commenting upon its subtitle ‘Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World’, we first introduce the originality of its style, perspective and method. Next, we propose a pneumatological approach to the text in order to avoid the polarizing interpretations which tend to oppose creation (modern autonomy) and Christology (tradition). Finally, we illustrate the enduring relevance of Gaudium et spes for Catholic social teaching in a context of globalisation. |
