Document Details : Title: New Contributions to Black Sea Iconography Author(s): BOUZEK, Jan Journal: Ancient West & East Volume: 14 Date: 2015 Pages: 237-252 DOI: 10.2143/AWE.14.0.3108194 Abstract : New finds at Pistiros of burnt sealings, attached originally to documents on papyri confirming contracts, are discussed together with other pictorial representations in the emporion, in Thrace and Scythia, and in the broader frame of the Black Sea area. Despite local differences, the whole of the Black Sea region, even in the field of iconography, formed a koine, in which the interrelations and trajectories enabled general and mutual understanding of depicted subjects. Pistiros, lying in central Thrace and with wide commercial contacts, played a significant role in mutual understanding between the Greeks and their neighbours. |
