They contain two fragments of poetry written in sureth, the Aramaic dialect which is still used as mother tongue by the Christians of northern Iraq; the second one was composed in 1863, and the first one possibly some decades before. They are of a hagiographic character: the first poem is consecrated to the life of St. Eugene, the legendary founder of monachism in Syria, and the second to Mar Tlaye of Tal, a folkloric saint from the mountains of Hakkari. |
