Document Details : Title: 'They Took the Body of God' Subtitle: John 19,40 in Codex Alexandrinus Author(s): HIXSON, Elijah Journal: Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses Volume: 90 Issue: 4 Date: 2014 Pages: 743-749 DOI: 10.2143/ETL.90.4.1000007 Abstract : In John 19,40, Codex Alexandrinus has the singular reading, το σωμα του θυ ('the body of God'). Based on the scribal habits in the fourth Gospel in Codex Alexandrinus and on its text elsewhere, this reading was likely a simple mistake, not an intentional change by the scribe. However, the date of Codex Alexandrinus places it near to the Nestorian controversy. It is unlikely that Codex Alexandrinus would have been read in isolation from the memory of the Nestorian controversy, and the accidental variant in John 19,40 would have had a theologically significant impact on its hearers. |
