Document Details : Title: Who was Jordanes? Author(s): DOLEŽAL, Stanislav Journal: Byzantion Volume: 84 Date: 2014 Pages: 145-164 DOI: 10.2143/BYZ.84.0.3049177 Abstract : Although the late Roman historian Jordanes supplies only meagre information on his own life, some hints in his works can be used to reconstruct it with some degree of certainty. For example, Jordanes should be understood in the context of Constantinople. The core of his geographical knowledge lies in the Balkans. His claims of Gothic ancestry are questionable and misleading. On the other hand, there are compelling reasons to link Jordanes with the community of the Gothi minores in the late Roman province of Moesia secunda. |
