Comparative theology may be regarded as a kind or species of theology if it engages alien texts and concepts with the purpose of better understanding the LORD the church worships. But it is better not to make this categorial move, and to reserve the category 'theology' for engagement with and response to what the LORD has explicitly and directly given to the church. Deep and close reading of alien texts may have profound theological yield, but is not itself theological. Gruber argues that Griffiths’ approach is violent in nature with respect to other religions and shows a militant, triumphalist side. She argues that the church has to expose itself to radical contingency, to the particularity of its normative founding event. |
