Subtitle: Literair toerisme in de vroege negentiende eeuw Author(s): HONINGS, Rick Journal: Spiegel der Letteren Volume: 56 Issue: 3 Date: 2014 Pages: 279-307 DOI: 10.2143/SDL.56.3.3040763 Abstract : Although there have been famous people since classical antiquity, celebrity culture came into existing in the nineteenth century. Like other types of artists, poets developed into figures with a public aura. Internationally, Byron is considered one of the first ‘modern’ celebrities in literary history. He managed to create a ‘branded identity’. At the same time, his practice as a poet illustrates the birth of fan culture. In the Netherlands, simultaneously, Willem Bilderdijk, an author with a fascinating image, grew into one of the most outstanding literary celebrities of his time. This article focuses on one specific example of fan culture: literary tourism during Bilderdijk’s life. Some admirers went on a pilgrimage to meet him. This kind of behavior has been given attention in international publications, but in Dutch literary history it is still a terra incognita. The case of Bilderdijk is an example of the very beginning of fan culture in the early nineteenth century. |
