Families could not answer questions about pastoral realities and natural law, which were the concern of pastors. Many questions could not be answered because the church is not present at the grassroots, and is not accustomed to collecting data relevant to the development of its ministry. The questionnaire thus shows that we need a better grasp of the basic realities. – There is an optimistic expectation that the Synod on the Family will result in a much better understanding of how to care for the family and appreciate it. Many in the church in Asia are concerned about whether the Synod discussions will take up only questions and concerns that are relevant to the family in a European context. The various Asian realities – interfaith marriages, poverty, migration, women’s place in the family, separated families, and fast-aging populations – are often too challenging to be included in debates that focus on the doctrinal and theological aspects of marriage and the family. |
