Document Details : Title: The Cancelleria Reliefs, Vespasian the Younger, and Domitian's Dynastic Program Author(s): PETRUCCIOLI, Guido Journal: BABESCH Volume: 89 Date: 2014 Pages: 109-127 DOI: 10.2143/BAB.89.0.3034671 Abstract : The present article discusses the various scholarly interpretations of the events depicted on the Cancelleria Reliefs, and identifies the scene in Panel B as the appointment of Titus Flavius Vespasianus the Younger as crown prince by his adoptive father, the emperor Domitian. This event, mentioned by historical accounts and commemorated in one provincial coin issue, was the climactic moment in Domitian’s program for the celebration of the Gens Flavia, which found its most grandiose manifestation in the public buildings that he dedicated in Rome to the cults of his father, brother, and extended family. |
