Document Details : Title: Digging for the 'Byz' Subtitle: Adventures into Byzantine and Ottoman Archaeology in the Eastern Mediterranean Author(s): VROOM, Joanita Journal: Pharos Volume: 19 Issue: 2 Date: 2013 Pages: 79-110 DOI: 10.2143/PHA.19.2.3015347 Abstract : The subject of this article is a new archaeological research project on key aspects of the material culture in the eastern Mediterranean during Byzantine and Ottoman times. The focus is on four major urban centres: Butrint in Albania, Athens in Greece, Ephesus in western Turkey and Tarsus in eastern Turkey. The project sets out to use the Medieval and Post-Medieval finds (especially pottery) in these towns as source of information on patterns of production, trade and consumption, both in a geographical perspective (differences per settlement) and from a chronological point of view (variations over time). The pottery finds are studied specifically in combination with architectural remains and other finds (such as coins, glass etc.) in order to shed maximum light on the spatial and economic development of the settlements, on the continuities and discontinuities in their habitation history, as well as on other features of human activity in these urban centres. The first results of the study of the material from Butrint and Athens are presented here. |
