Document Details : Title: The Overland Route Subtitle: Intra-Anatolia Interaction ca. 1000-540 BC and the Transmission of the Alphabet Author(s): VAN DONGEN, Erik Journal: Ancient West & East Volume: 12 Date: 2013 Pages: 47-70 DOI: 10.2143/AWE.12.0.2994443 Abstract : Through an analysis of the textual and archaeological material, this article presents a new, up-to-date overview of the history and mechanisms of Iron Age Anatolian overland interaction, a much-neglected subject. Among other points, the overview demonstrates the importance of Phrygia in this context, and that Lydia did not take over its international contacts completely. A case study of the transmission of the alphabet in light of the insights gained concludes the article. A new theory is proposed, according to which the Phrygian and Greek alphabets had a common origin in Cilicia, in the late 9th century BC. |
