Document Details : Title: Het verlossende woord Subtitle: De Utrechtse bijbels (ca. 1430-1480) in context Author(s): WARNAR, Geert Journal: Ons Geestelijk Erf Volume: 83 Issue: 3 Date: September 2012 Pages: 264-284 DOI: 10.2143/OGE.83.3.2182884 Abstract : This article explores the contexts of a series of illustrated Dutch bibles in manuscript that were produced in or around Utrecht between 1430 and 1460, in order to argue that these books circulated in a relatively broad community of lay readers. Although research on the medieval Dutch Bible translation tends to associate this with the religious initiatives of the Modern Devotion from the late fourteenth-century onwards, this paper collects evidence for a much broader setting including confraternities and individuals from an (urban) lay elite interested in religious literature and education. These groups were primarily interested in forms of traditional religion, related to issues of salvation rather than the meditative spirituality of religious communities. |
