Document Details : Title: Normative and Non-Normative Burial Practices in the Necropoleis of the Greek Colonies in the Western Black Sea Area Author(s): DAMYANOV, Margarit Journal: Ancient West & East Volume: 11 Date: 2012 Pages: 35-68 DOI: 10.2143/AWE.11.0.2175877 Abstract : The article is an overview of the existing data from the Greek necropoleis in the western Black Sea region, aimed at identifying burial practices that may reveal the existence of different statuses within the community. Literary and epigraphic evidence is adduced to support the hypothesis that there were individuals and groups in the Greek poleis that received special treatment after death. Then, archaeological evidence is discussed that could provide a ‘normative’ background against which ‘non-normative’ practices might be discerned. |
