Document Details : Title: 'Panik' im Heer Subtitle: Dareios III., die Schlacht von Gaugamela und die Mondfinsternis vom 20. September 331 v. Chr. Author(s): ROLLINGER, Robert , RUFFING, Kai Journal: Iranica Antiqua Volume: 47 Date: 2012 Pages: 101-115 DOI: 10.2143/IA.47.0.2141962 Abstract : This paper presents a crucial re-examination of the battle of Gaugamela and one of its major sources (AD I, no.-330). It is argued that the alleged 'panic' in the Persian army, as recorded in the Astronomical Diary -330, should not be taken as plain fact as it has generally been done by recent scholarship. The authors evaluate the ideological background of the Babylonian term ḫattu ('panic') and highlight the need for a critical treatment of the cuneiform source. |
