Too often we find authors straining too far to draw comparisons between antiquity and the modern world, on the one hand, or eschewing useful terminology and valid comparison on the other. Those writing about antiquity show far more desire to look to the recent past for models than ‘Modern Historians’ to look at antiquity (nowadays, at least). Examples are provided here of false and forced analogy, in part to show how far things can be pushed but rejecting the notion that they should be. At the same time, we hope to show that neither ancient nor modern colonisation (or colonialism?) was as monolithic as many suppose. |
