Document Details : Title: Pluralism vs. Particularity; Openness and Commitment Subtitle: A Review Article Author(s): VROOM, Hendrik M. Journal: Studies in Interreligious Dialogue Volume: 21 Issue: 1 Date: 2011 Pages: 112-124 DOI: 10.2143/SID.21.1.2129553 Abstract : One of the central issues in the discussion on interreligious relations is the nature of those relations. Should one have a pluralist approach or a particularist? This review article discusses two recent books that wrestle with the pluralist-particularist dilemma. Both authors, who are Chrsitian, have a keen eye for the particularity of the various religious traditions and sub-traditions with openness to learning from one another. Paul Hedges comes closer to the pluralist view and Heleen Maat to the particularist. Hedges refers to a wide variety of recent publications and thus offers a survey of much of the English literature on the topic, whereas Maat discusses important thinkers over a number of decades who have contributed a great deal to the rise of these discussions in the last quarter of the twentieth century. |
