Khartank, 256/870) was a major collector and critic of hadith. He looked for material in Khurasan, Iraq, the Hijaz, Syria, and Egypt. His works include major biographical dictionaries of traditionists and several topical collections of hadith as well as al-Ṣaḥīḥ. The extent and nature of repetition in the Ṣaḥīḥ are here discussed, the most common version of ‘Bukhārī’s criterion’ is shown to be unsupported by the evidence, and estimates are proposed for the number of hadith reports that Bukhārī knew but did not include in the Ṣaḥīḥ. In law and theology, he supported the moderate Sunni tendency. It was mainly adherents of the same, predominantly Shāfi‘i in law and Ash‘ari in theology, who extolled the Ṣaḥīḥ until it became, by the fifth/eleventh century, the pre-eminent Sunni collection of hadith. |
