Document Details : Title: Hume's Naturalistic Critique of Religion Author(s): KAIL, Peter Journal: Tijdschrift voor Filosofie Volume: 72 Issue: 3 Date: 2010 Pages: 481-495 DOI: 10.2143/TVF.72.3.2056204 Abstract : My paper addresses the senses in which Hume’s naturalistic approach to religion can contribute to a critique of religion by discussing his 1757 Natural History of Religion. I compare Hume’s approach with a recent paper of Raymond Geuss in order to show that Hume’s approach to religion is not ‘naïve’ in the way that some (Geuss included) assume. I shall argue that Hume is sensitive to aspects of religion that are not concerned with the epistemic standing of a central commitment to the existence of belief. |
