One of the most underestimated consequences of the pontifical decision was, beyond all doubt, a new repartition of the theological factions which were fighting each other in the quarrel over grace, after the disparition of one of the most influent institutional protagonist of this controversy. The present essay aims at analysing how a sort of circular permutation then happened by which Dominicans invaded a polemical space not long ago occupied by Molinists, while Augustinians were playing the part previously allotted to Thomists. Following a philothomist tactic to which they were for ages prone, the Jansenists have not been successful in accommodating themselves to this alteration of the controversial equilibrium. |
