Journal: Ons Geestelijk Erf Volume: 80 Issue: 2 Date: Juni 2009 Pages: 86-120 DOI: 10.2143/OGE.80.2.2044671 Abstract : The Hours of the Desert, presented here, are preserved in two manuscripts: Antwerp, Museum Plantin-Moretus, nr. 14.12, and Leiden, University Library, Ltk. 288. In the Leiden manuscript, they are related to the liturgy of the first Sunday in Lent, where the Gospel reading gives the story of Jesus’ temptation in the desert. The Antwerp Hours, in their place in the series, have no such liturgical relation. They open nevertheless with a full page miniature, showing Jesus being tempted by Satan. The text of these Hours present the spiritual feelings of the soul, in her solitude, in the interior desert, longing for the consolation of the Lord. In expressing these personal spiritual relationship with Jesus, the Hours of the Desert have a specific character, especially for women in the monasteries, convents and houses related to the Modern Devotion. |
