Document Details : Title: 'Het laken wordt een muur van klei en as' Subtitle: Tekst en intertekst in Obsidiaan van Pieter Verhelst Author(s): GORUS, Kim Journal: Spiegel der Letteren Volume: 51 Issue: 2 Date: 2009 Pages: 151-171 DOI: 10.2143/SDL.51.2.2038111 Abstract : The work of Peter Verhelst is interspersed with references to the visual arts. This essay explores how these references can be studied in a systematic manner. Starting from a theoretical overview of the concepts of ekphrasis and spatial form, a three-dimensional model is developed to study the interaction between text and image on a thematic, structural and material level. This model is then applied to the references to the paintings of Francis Bacon in Verhelst’s first collection of poems Obsidiaan (1987). This analysis shows that the affinity with the visual arts is not merely restricted to the descriptive but can have far-reaching consequences for the overall make-up of the text. |
