Document Details : Title: A Fourteenth-Century Armenian Polemic against Judaism and its Latin Source Author(s): LA PORTA, Sergio Journal: Le Muséon Volume: 122 Issue: 1-2 Date: 2009 Pages: 93-129 DOI: 10.2143/MUS.122.1.2037153 Abstract : In volume I of his Book of Questions, Grigor Tat‘ewac‘i (1344-1409) included a polemic against Judaism. The short chapter is particularly interesting for its explicit citation of Jewish sources such as the Talmudic tractates Sanhedrin and Yoma. This article demonstrates that the source of Tat‘ewac‘i’s knowledge of Jewish texts is Porchetus de Salvaticis’s Victoria Porcheti adversus impios hebraeos (1303), which in turn is dependent upon Raymond Martini’s Pugio Fidei (1278). This article further argues that Tat‘ewac‘i did not have direct access to this text, but relied upon an Armenian translation of a Latin text that had extracted material from Porchetus’s treatise. |
