Document Details : Title: The Afflictions of Exile Subtitle: A Syriac Memrā by David Puniqāyā Author(s): BUTTS, Aaron Michael Journal: Le Muséon Volume: 122 Issue: 1-2 Date: 2009 Pages: 53-80 DOI: 10.2143/MUS.122.1.2037151 Abstract : An edition with English translation is provided of a Syriac memrā entitled ‘On the Afflictions of Exile’, which was composed by David Puniqāyā, a Syrian Orthodox priest, author, and poet who flourished in the latter half of the fifteenth century. The edition is based on Paris, Bibl. Nat. Syr. 209, which is dated to year 1956 of the Greeks (= 1644/5 CE). An apparatus also supplies the textual variants found in ms. Ataneh 85, which was copied in 1909 CE. This memrā is a further witness to late Classical Syriac literature, only a relatively small sample of which has thus far been published. |
