Document Details : Title: Eva's overgave Subtitle: Een alternatieve lezing van Carry van Bruggens roman Eva Author(s): POLS, Gijsbert Journal: Spiegel der Letteren Volume: 50 Issue: 3 Date: 2008 Pages: 297-322 DOI: 10.2143/SDL.50.3.2033476 Abstract : Within Dutch literary studies, Carry van Bruggen endmost novel Eva is commonly considered to be a linear coming-of-age novel and a literary adaptation of Van Bruggen’s philosophical ideas. This interpretation can be attributed to the novel’s reception by the prominent Dutch critic Menno ter Braak. This article presents an alternative to this view. Based on narratological arguments, an alternative approach is developed which does not focus on the emerging of a critical individual, but on the articulation of an experience of unity. |
