Document Details : Title: The Twilight Zone of the Noli me tangere Subtitle: Contributions to the History of the Motif in Western Europe (ca. 400-ca. 1000) Author(s): BAERT, Barbara , KUSTERS, Liesbet Journal: Louvain Studies Volume: 32 Issue: 3 Date: 2007 Pages: 255-303 DOI: 10.2143/LS.32.3.2033415 Abstract : In this essay, we will use the iconological method to locate the genesis of the Noli me tangere motif. More specifically, we will examine the ways in which the motif evolved iconographically during the Carolingian and Ottonian periods. It subsequently became the source of a rich visual tradition. The history of its iconographic development is considered against the background of the history of the Church and spirituality, cult formation and socio-religious context. These contexts supplied the mechanisms which determined the earliest form of the Noli me tangere motif. |
