The sermon’s purpose is to encourage ecclesiastical personages to adopt the characteristics and functions of the nine orders of angels as a role model for their ministry. While drawing heavily on Latin sources such as Gregory the Great and Isidore of Seville, his Victorine predecessors, Hugh and Richard of St Victor, as well as the thought of the Pseudo-Dionysius, the sermon (or nota collecta) also raises some questions about the relationship between Thomas Gallus and Robert Grosseteste. |
