Document Details : Title: Embracing Christ Subtitle: Sixteenth Century Meditation Schemes for Novices using the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises Author(s): CAMILLERI, Charlò Journal: Studies in Spirituality Volume: 18 Date: 2008 Pages: 245-260 DOI: 10.2143/SIS.18.0.2033292 Abstract : The present article explores an unpublished sixteenth century manuscript, referred to as Miscellaneo, preserved in the Carmelite monastery of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Florence. The Miscellaneo contains a copy of the General Claudio Aquaviva’s letter to the Jesuits on the renewal of the spiritual life written in 1583, schemes for meditation, and prayers in preparation and thanksgiving for Holy Communion. The analysis of the contents present in the manuscript shows that the varied texts were not randomly copied in this manuscript. The transcriber carefully reordered these independent texts into one volume to pedagogically lead the exercitant of the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises to embrace Christ and his values in the context of vocational discernment and commitment to renewal. |
