Document Details : Title: Faith in the Quest Subtitle: The Relevance of the First and Third Quests to the Understanding of the 'Christ-Event' Author(s): MERRIGAN, Terence Journal: Louvain Studies Volume: 32 Issue: 1-2 Date: 2007 Pages: 153-163 DOI: 10.2143/LS.32.1.2032356 Abstract : This article reflects on the theological significance of the attempt to reconstruct the history of Jesus of Nazareth in isolation from the response that his words and deeds and destiny engendered in the earliest witnesses to him. The attempt to do just this is characteristic of both the First and the Third Quests, and distinguishes these from the so-called New Quest. In terms of the evolution of modern Jesus-research, the significance of the New Quest is to be located above all in its attempt to create a space within which historical research and faith in the Christ-event could co-exist. For this reason, continues to possess a certain paradigmatic value for properly theological research into Jesus of Nazareth (where theology is understood as the church’s reflection on its faith). |
