Document Details : Title: Doing Islamic Theology in Europe Subtitle: A Unique Experience of the Faculty of Islamic Studies in Sarajevo Author(s): KARČIĆ, Fikret Journal: Studies in Interreligious Dialogue Volume: 18 Issue: 1 Date: 2008 Pages: 105-111 DOI: 10.2143/SID.18.1.2031614 Abstract : This article deals with the conceptual and institutional development of Islamic higher learning in Bosnia and Herzegovina as exemplified through the history of present Faculty of Islamic Studies in Sarajevo. This history shows how the social position of Islam in a particular country influences the conceptual and methodological attitude toward the study of Islam. In Bosnia and Herzegovina modern history saw this Faculty shift from being a shari’ah law-oriented school toward being an institution of Islamic theology combined with a religious studies approach. With respect to textbooks and reading materials in the field of Islamic theology proper, it shows a shift from classical Muslim manuals from the Ottoman Islamic cultural zone to materials written by contemporary Muslim and non-Muslim authors. |
