Document Details : Title: From Just War to Virtues of Benevolence Subtitle: Renovating the Just War Theory Author(s): PRATT, Daniel Journal: Louvain Studies Volume: 31 Issue: 3-4 Date: 2006 Pages: 276-305 DOI: 10.2143/LS.31.3.2028187 Abstract : This article questions the viability of the just war theory in the terrorist context. Defects in justificatory and double effect reasoning are analyzed in several classic just war cases and the US rationale for the present war in Iraq. Close attention is placed on the acts of the mind underlying these justifications and the different grades of deliberation in just war reasoning. Insights from virtue epistemology and cosmopolitanism justice are used to develop the virtue of benevolence as a correction of the theory. Martha Nussbaum, Linda Zagzebski and Aquinas are key resources. |
