Defects in justificatory and double effect reasoning are analyzed in several classic just war cases and the US rationale for the present war in Iraq. Close attention is placed on the acts of the mind underlying these justifications and the different grades of deliberation in just war reasoning. Insights from virtue epistemology and cosmopolitanism justice are used to develop the virtue of benevolence as a correction of the theory. Martha Nussbaum, Linda Zagzebski and Aquinas are key resources. |
