Document Details : Title: Reform Movements within Christianity and Islam Author(s): HICK, John Journal: Studies in Interreligious Dialogue Volume: 17 Issue: 2 Date: 2007 Pages: 232-238 DOI: 10.2143/SID.17.2.2024009 Abstract : Historically, Christianity and Islam have long been in conflict, fed today by both a widespread Muslim resentment of Western aggression in Islamic lands, and on the Christian side by both the horror of suicide bombings and more pervasively by a widespread Islamophobia based largely in public ignorance and misinformation. However, there are now minority movements of reform within both faiths that have a potentiality eventually to transform Christian-Muslim relations. These consist in new ways of understanding both the Qur'an and Christian doctrine. This new thinking, at present confined within Islam to a small highly educated minority, and within Christianity to a small minority of radical theological thinkers, is briefly outlined in the article. |
