Document Details : Title: Between East and West Subtitle: The Greek Poleis as Part of a World-System Author(s): VLASSOPOULOS, Kostas Journal: Ancient West & East Volume: 6 Date: 2007 Pages: 91-111 DOI: 10.2143/AWE.6.0.2022795 Abstract : Standard accounts of Greek history have been overwhelmingly polis-centred, Athenocentric and Hellenocentric; they have thus often marginalised the wider Greek world and separated Greek history from the wider Mediterranean and Near Eastern world. This article aims to situate Greek history within a wider world-system. It looks at how we can construct a new subject of Greek history by focusing on the networks moving goods, peoples and ideas and the various centres that organise this world-system. |
