Document Details : Title: A 19th-Century Coptic Priest's Outfit in the National Museums of Scotland Subtitle: Initial Observations Author(s): AL-KHAMIS, Ulrike Journal: Khil'a Volume: 2 Date: 2006 Pages: 111-119 DOI: 10.2143/KH.2.0.2021287 Abstract : The subject of this article is a Coptic outfit, consisting of a tunic and stole, which were donated to the National Museums of Scotland in 1934. The tunic is embroidered on the front and back, and on both sleeves. Most conspicuous is a a large polyglobed medallion that contains a frontal depiction of the Virgin Mary carrying the Christ Child on her left arm. The stole is also embroidered, and includes two large Coptic crosses. The style of embroidery can be attributed to the late eighteenth or early nineteenth centuries. |
