Investigating five different types of workshops (bakeries, fulleries, dyeries, tanneries and lanifricariae), it emerges that manufacturing took place throughout the city in a wide range of contexts and that workshops often were situated in buildings also used for domestic purposes, either houses or apartments with a shop. This suggests that craftsmen lived and worked in relative autonomy and that the urban elite had less control over them than is usually assumed. |
