Document Details : Title: Een 'Himmel-und-Hölle-Spiel' Subtitle: Cees Nootebooms In Nederland vanuit een imagologisch perspectief Author(s): OOSTERHOLT, Jan Journal: Spiegel der Letteren Volume: 48 Issue: 4 Date: 2006 Pages: 427-442 DOI: 10.2143/SDL.48.4.2020219 Abstract : In this article Cees Nooteboom’s In Nederland, published in 1984, is read from an imagological perspective. Dutch literary critics traditionally interpret the novel as an attack on Dutch mentality, originating from an author who has fled his native country. A closer look, however, invalidates such an interpretation. National stereotypes are used, but only to be exposed as pseudo-certainties. In this way the text undermines the standard discourse about Dutch mentality. |
