This article starts from a lesser known rhetoricians’ text, namely the Baladen van Doornijcke [the ballad of Tournai] (1521/1522), written by the prominent retorician Matthijs de Castelein from the Flemish town of Oudenaarde. The second part of the Baladen is particularly remarkable since it presents a downright tirade against the inhabitants of the neighbouring city of Tournai. The text is exceptional within the corpus of the rhetoricians’ literature. Nevertheless it can only be understood in the context of the larger literary practices of the rhetoricians, where competition among towns took a central place. |
