Document Details : Title: The Story of Ancient Hebrew 'ăšer Author(s): HOLMSTEDT, Robert D. Journal: Ancient Near Eastern Studies Volume: 43 Date: 2006 Pages: 7-26 DOI: 10.2143/ANES.43.0.2018762 Abstract : This study is an investigation of the history of the Hebrew word 'aer, from the earliest inscriptional and biblical data to Mishnaic Hebrew, including the language of Ben Sira and the Qumran Scrolls. I consider the argument that 'aer witnesses a diachronic development, adding non-relative functions to the original relative function in later stages of ancient Hebrew, and conclude that the data do not support such an analysis. Instead, I argue that 'aer has a single function throughout ancient Hebrew: to nominalise clauses. |
