A Status Quaestionis The study of historical stained-glass in Flanders began in the 19th century. The Royal Commission for Monuments played an important role through its attention to this historical patrimony. In the run-up to the Second World War, the most important stained-glass ensembles in Belgium were removed to safety. This offered a chance to systematically photograph and document all the historical stained-glass windows. In order to publicise this information and facilitate further art-historical research, the Corpus Vitrearum Medii Aevi was set up in 1952. As of now, documentation of all the historical stained-glass in Belgium to 1550 has been published. The renewed conceptions concerning the conservation and restoration of stained-glass, starting in the 1990s, has created a significant stimulus for the art-historical study of stained-glass in Flanders. Art historians and restorers are carrying out research and shedding light on the art of glass. |
