Document Details : Title: Some Thoughts on Ancient Mesopotamian Magic and Religion Author(s): SCURLOCK, JoAn Journal: Bibliotheca Orientalis Volume: 59 Issue: 5-6 Date: september - december 2002 Pages: 468-481 DOI: 10.2143/BIOR.59.5.2015687 Abstract : The book under review, Mesopotamian Magic: Textual, Historical, and Interpretive Perspectives, was the result of a conference on Mesopotamian magic organized by the NIAS (Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences) at Wassenaar as part of a year-long research project on the theme “Magic and Religion in the Ancient Near East”. Although the comments which a reviewer needs to make are by necessity critical, nothing is intended to take away from the very real contribution to the discussion of the vexed questions of “magic” and “religion” represented by the conference and by the weekly seminars that preceded it. The textual perspectives promised by the title are provided by the final section, entitled “texts”, which consists of four papers for most of which text copies are provided. |
