Bovendien werd in het verleden weinig aandacht besteed aan een vergelijkend onderzoek van de vici in Vlaanderen. Op die manier heeft deze studie de bedoeling een ruim kader te creëren dat een nieuw inzicht geeft in de betekenis en de problematiek van de zogenaamde Gallo-Romeinse vici in onze streken. The vici. An inventory and functional analysis of some so-called vici in Flanders from the beginning of the 1st to the end of the 4th century AD. The study of the so-called vici can be situated in the framework of the research on Gallo-Roman settlement in Flanders and the archaeological definition of the term vicus. The exact meaning of this term is disputed in the ancient literature as well as among modern researchers. Moreover, little attention has been paid in the past to a comparative research of the vici in Flanders. The aim of the present research is to create a framework providing new insights into the meaning and problems of the so-called Gallo-Roman vici in Flanders. |
