There is evidence of two forms: nip'e and nip'ā. We have found four traditions: a. One tradition maintains both nip'e and nip'ā without any difference in meaning or function. b. The tradition preserved in MS Parma-B distinguishes between nip'e functioning as a nominal participle and nip'ā functioning as a verbal participle. c. nip'ā has become the dominant form in one tradition. These three traditions - a, b, c - reflect the eastern branch of Mishnaic Hebrew. d. The traditions reflecting the western branch of Mishnaic Hebrew (attested in Italian manuscripts or Leghorn edition) preserve nip'e; nip'ā is consistently found in only one word - na'asā. 2) The participle pi''ūl, which serves as passive participle of Qal alongside pā'ūl, is preserved only in old manuscripts. Frequently the form pi''ūl is corrected to pā'ūl, e.g., limmūd > lāmūd. 3) yābeš, which is the Qal participle of yb, occurs once in the Mishna with the meaning yabbāā. This phenomenon can be seen only in reliable manuscripts; the form has been corrected to yabbāā in unreliable manuscripts and printed editions of the Mishna. |
