During his life-time several momentous events took place in the island which belonged then to the Ottoman Empire, including blood-libels against the Jews, civil war between the Turcs and the Greeks, the intervention of the Great European powers, the annexation of Crete to Greece in 1912 and World War I. His autobiography and letters reflect life filled with tension, both religious and political. They also indicate that he served as an energetic, dedicated and altruistic public figure and spiritual leader both inside and outside Crete. |
