On a more general level, he deals through these exemples with the problem of violence when, as presented in the early islamic traditions, it is used for sacred purposes. He brings forth a reading of these texts, which introduces the reader into a type of narrative in which 'historical' narration intermingles with a theology based on the coranic theme of annihilated peoples; by doing so, the author goes beyond the strict historical point of view and also integrates the coranic text and its later commentaries. |
