Document Details : Title: Kouwenaars 'Men' Author(s): KUSTER, Wiel Journal: Spiegel der Letteren Volume: 47 Issue: 1 Date: 2005 Pages: 75-77 DOI: 10.2143/SDL.47.1.2004815 Abstract : In this article some possibilities are suggested for the interpretation of the remarkable use by the Dutch poet Gerrit Kouwenaar (°1923) of the impersonal pronoun ‘men’ [one] when designating the poet’s voice. This ‘men’ can be interpreted as a residue of Kouwenaar’s initial social and political bias towards ‘(man)kind’; as an indication of an epicuristic dimension in his poetry; and as a symptom of a ‘poststructuralistic’ loss of identity. |
