With the exception of one review, Gilliams has never expressed his aversion explicitly. The difference of opinion between both Flemish authors, who played a leading role in the prose renewal of the interbellum period, is mainly based on an entirely different concept of the novel. While Walschap holds on to his definition of the ‘novel as a story’, Gilliams dreams of ‘the book without events’ and ‘le livre sur rien’. The underlying controversy is evidenced by the notes in Gilliams’ journals, private letters, archive material and an unfinished (unpublished) public school novel. The personal contact which existed between both authors has undoubtedly stimulated the caution and implicitness with which Gilliams approached his rival. |
